Given is a portrait project made at the National Ploughing Championships in Ireland, exploring what might be carried from one generation to the next without much choice.

Given is about inheritance understood not as property but as condition. Farming makes inheritance unusually literal: land, work, knowledge and responsibility move through generations. But what happens when we remove the familiar environment? The photographs push that idea into the body. Age becomes evidence; resemblance suggests lineage; differences may  attest to choice or fate. Posture and physical presence become signs of a culture received rather than invented.  Almost every sitter began the session with a practised smile that they feel makes them acceptable to the camera that I had to find a way to get past.
